48th ANNUAL MEETING
Connection and Community Amidst Crisis: Sharing Power and Reimagining Care
The SSPC Annual Meeting brings together scholars, clinicians, and community leaders to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and foster collaborations that address the complex challenges of mental health in diverse cultural contexts, with the goal of emphasizing reciprocal learning across borders, communities, and disciplines.
Meet Our Plenary Speaker
Suzan Song, MD, MPH, PhD, is a psychiatrist and global mental health expert whose work examines how culture, community, and social context shape suffering and healing. For more than two decades, she has worked across clinical psychiatry, humanitarian response, research, and public policy, from caring for survivors of torture and human trafficking to working alongside former child soldiers, refugees, and communities affected by war and displacement across Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.
Dr. Song has advised multiple United Nations and U.S. federal agencies as well as Ministries of Health on mental health policy and psychosocial care for children and families in crisis. She previously established and directed Global Child and Family Mental Health at Boston Children’s Hospital and is a professor of psychiatry and public health at George Washington University. Her work expands an understanding of healing beyond the clinic and recognizes the knowledge, relationships, rituals, and sources of meaning within communities. She is the author of Why We Suffer and How We Heal, which brings together research, clinical practice, and lessons from communities around the world to examine how people find a sense of grounding through profound adversity.
